Yes, that’s right. Ever since the introduction of the Mahindra Scorpio-N, the indigenous carmaker retained the Scorpio Classic and discontinued a few of its variants. However, both SUVs are among the bestselling Mahindra cars in the country.
As you may know, the Scorpio Classic is the third facelift version of the first generation, making the Scorpio-N a second generation. Furthermore, the Scorpio Classic has only two variants: S and S 11. When there were several variants, the S variant was the base variant, while the S 11 was the top-of-the-line. However, the carmaker axed middle variants and retained the base and the top variants.
The starting ex-showroom price of the Mahindra Scorpio Classic is Rs 13 lakh, making it marginally cheaper than the Scorpio-N’s price. Its starting ex-showroom price is Rs 13.5 lakh.
So, let’s see what all you get if you sign a cheque for the Mahindra Scorpio Classic.
Specifications
As far as the specifications are concerned, the Mahindra Scorpio is solely available in diesel. It is powered by the Scorpio-N’s 2.2-litre diesel engine but with a different state of tune. That said, the engine has a lower state of tune. The 2184cc, four-cylinder, mHawk engine is tuned to churn out 130.07 bhp at 3750 rpm and 300 Nm of peak torque at 2800 rpm. It sends power to its rear wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission. Those who want an automatic transmission cannot choose one as it’s not on offer. But, there is an upcoming mid variant, which might offer an automatic transmission.

Moreover, this 2.2-litre mHawk has a turbocharger as well. In addition, it is BS6.2 compliant.
This SUV stores fuel in its 60-litre fuel tank. Aside from that, the Scorpio Classic also has a regenerative braking feature and an idle start/stop feature. With these two features and if used properly, you will be able to see improved fuel efficiency.
However, the Mahindra Scorpio’s mileage is 15 km/l. It is worth noting that this is an ARAI-claimed mileage figure. The real-world mileage figure can, however, vary with the local traffic condition and individuals’ driving styles.
Besides the fuel efficiency, the Mahindra Scorpio Classic is considered a hardcore SUV plus an off-roader, thanks to its ladder-frame construction and off-road-oriented suspension setup. It stands on a double wishbone-type suspension with an independent coil spring at the front and a multi-link coil spring suspension with an anti-roll bar at the rear. It also has hydraulic shock absorbers.
In terms of rideability, you can expect an impressive off-road capability but a not-so-impressive city drive. But, perhaps, its city drivability should be better than its hardcore off-roader sibling, the Mahindra Thar. The Scorpio Classic’s price is Rs 13 lakh, while the Thar’s price is Rs 10.54 lakh. All are ex-showroom prices.
However, it is always recommended to take a test drive so that you can get a better understanding of the Mahindra cars.
As for the braking duties, the Mahindra Scorpio has a standard disc-drum setup, making it, unlike the Scorpio-N, though. It is worth mentioning that a vehicle with all disc brakes will always have a superior braking performance than a vehicle with a conventional setup.
Moreover, the Mahindra Scorpio runs on 17-inch steel rims and optional alloy wheels. It has a standard tyre profile of 235/65 R17.
