In a few weeks, the 16th edition Indian Premier League (IPL), will begin (March 31). Let’s look back at the history of the IPL’s top 10 fastest centuries.

In the history of the Indian Premier League, there have been 75 individual centuries. Eight came in the final season, the most ever in an IPL season. This is a clear trend. The trend is clear. Batting has evolved to a 360-scoring run-fest, and the T20 match has become more geared toward bats. Yet, only one century has been scored on this list in the last three seasons.

David Miller: 38 balls, Kings XI Punjab v Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2013

David Miller, who scored a 38-ball century in the defeat to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (2013), is third on this list. Killer Miller was announced by this knock. With Kings XI Punjab, he was required to score 140 runs in 12.2 innings. He was so dominant that they won the chase in two overs.

Adam Gilchrist: 42 balls Deccan Chargers v Mumbai Indians IPL 2008

With a 42-ball century during the inaugural season, Indian Premier League’s Adam Gilchrist is fourth. Gilchrist, despite a modest target to score 155 against the Mumbai Indians scored 109 runs. The Deccan Chargers won by 10 wickets, while VVS Laxman, his opening partner, was not out at 37 runs from 26 balls.

AB de Villiers: 43 balls Royal Challengers Bangalore v Gujarat Lions IPL 2016, 2016

How could AB de Villiers be not on the list of fastest IPL centuries? De Villiers and Virat Kohli struck 129 runs off 52 balls in the 2016 league match against Gujarat Lions. Kohli scored a hundred, and RCB won by 144 runs with 248-3.

David Warner: 43 balls, Sunrisers Hyderabad Vs Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2017, IPL 2017.

David Warner is one of the most consistent IPL batters and it’s only right that his name appears in the IPL 100 fastest centurions. Warner batted first in a 2017 match against Kolkata Knight Riders and hit 126 runs off 59 balls. Warner hit ten fours, and eight sixes, and led his team to 209-3. KKR was 48 runs short of their target.

Sanath Jayasuriya: 45 balls, Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2008

Sanath Jayasuriya scored 114 runs in just 58 balls against Chennai Super Kings, in one of the most exciting knocks in IPL history. This was in an IPL chase that had been 157. Mumbai won the game with six runs to spare. Guess who was next? Extras with 16 runs.

Mayank Agarwal: 45 balls, Kings XI Punjab v Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2020

With his 45-ball century against the Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah, Mayank Agarwal is ranked eighth on the list. Mayank batted first and made the most of the small boundaries and fresh pitch to take down the Rajasthan bowlers. KXIP ended with 223-2, but it wasn’t enough. Rajasthan retook the title with three more balls.

Murali Vijay: 46 balls. Chennai Super Kings v Rajasthan Royals. IPL 2010.

Murali Vijay gave a masterclass in Chennai during IPL 2010. He batted first and hit 127 runs off 56 balls. Chennai finished with a staggering 246-5. Rajasthan performed well with the bat but they missed the target by 23 runs.

Chris Gayle: 46 balls, Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2011

This was Chris Gayle’s breakthrough season in the IPL. He was not sold in the auction and was replaced by RCB mid-season. The story of what happened is well known. He scored two centuries. One of his runs was a 49-ball 107 against Kings XI Punjab. RCB won comfortably the match by 85 runs with a score of 205-6.
