Back pain is a common health issue that many of us may experience at some point in our lives. Back discomfort can occur for a variety of causes, including a poor sleeping position or a careless sitting posture, and it can be aggravated if left untreated. Back discomfort, fortunately, can be relieved, controlled, and even prevented with the appropriate steps. 

In Ayurveda, back pain is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the three doshas (biological energies) in the body: vata, pitta, and kapha. Vata imbalances can lead to stiffness and pain in the lower back, while pitta imbalances can cause inflammation and pain in the upper back. Kapha imbalances can cause stiffness and pain in the middle back. Additionally, Ayurveda suggests that poor posture, injury, and certain lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise, stress, and poor diet can also contribute to back pain.

Causes of Back pain

  1. Musculoskeletal issues: This includes problems with the muscles, bones, and joints in the back, such as strains, sprains, and herniated discs.
  2. Degenerative conditions: Age-related degeneration of the spine, such as osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis, can cause chronic back pain.
  3. Poor posture: Sitting or standing in an unnatural position for an extended period of time can put strain on the back muscles and lead to pain.
  4. Injuries: Trauma to the back, such as a sports injury or car accident, can cause acute or chronic back pain.
  5. Stress: Stress and tension can cause muscles to tighten and lead to back pain.
  6. Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as a urinary tract infection, kidney stones or infection, or even some forms of cancer, can cause back pain.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Back pain

Ayurvedic treatment for back pain typically involves a holistic approach that focuses on restoring balance to the body’s doshas and addressing the underlying causes of the pain. Some common Ayurveda treatments in Kerala for back pain include:

  1. Herbal remedies: Ayurvedic practitioners may recommend taking herbal supplements or using herbal oils to reduce inflammation, ease pain, and promote healing.
  2. Navarakizhi: This pain-relieving treatment employs shashtikashali pinda or Navarakizhi, which is made from Special Shali rice boiled in milk and herbs. In nature, this form of massage and steam is incredibly nourishing. Navarakizhi alleviates back discomfort and delays the progression of degeneration, allowing it to move more freely. Navarakizhi reduces the pain, edoema, and stiffness caused by joint ailments such as arthritis, spondylosis, and others.
  3. Yoga and other exercises: Certain yoga poses and exercises can help to strengthen the back muscles and improve posture, which can alleviate back pain.
  4. Abhyanga : Professional therapists use heated medicated oil to conduct gentle back massages. Pain medicines from Ayurveda, such as mahanaryana taila, dhanwantaram taila, karpastayadi taila, kottamchukadi taila, and others, are commonly utilised. A whole-body massage followed by a steam bath can quickly treat back pain, joint discomfort, and stiffness. Usually done for 3 to 7 days.
  5. Panchakarma: It is a traditional Ayurvedic method which includes a range of treatments such as Vaman, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana. It helps to remove toxins and balance doshas to provide relief from pain.
